Navigating Insurance in the Age of Climate Change: A Tale of Fire and Water, Event Recap

Thu, February 27, 2025 7:18 AM | Anonymous member (Administrator)

Last week, we heard from a panel of insurance experts from the Portland area and beyond to learn how hosts can protect themselves in an age of increasingly serious weather events and global climate change. We were so thankful that Nick Massey from Proper Insurance, Geoff Dorn from Country Financial, and Jeff Greco from Steadily were able to provide insights on how hosts can future-proof their investments.

It is expected that insurance rates have mostly been stabilized after a period of rapid rate increases, but hosts can continue to budget for annual adjustments based upon an insurer's overall book of business and claims payouts. One tip that Geoff Dorn mentioned was that if you've been with your insurer for a while, shop your coverage and if no one else wants to quote on your business, there's a high chance it is in a high risk zone and may be cancelled by your carrier in the near future.

Luckily, the majority of our members live in a milder climate zone where most of us will continue to be able to be insured, even during periods of high cancellations.

Do all the things you can to prepare your home for water or fire damage as these are the two most common perils to befall a home. Proactively there are things you can do to minimize damage from water intrusions and to help prevent fires.

This was a really informative conversation. We hope that if you had to miss the event, that you check out the video on Youtube for lots of useful tips and valuable insights from the experts with Proper Insurance, Country Financial, and Steadily.
